Route
Day 1, Arrival in Passau

Your journey begins with individual travel arrangements to Passau. At your arrival hotel, you will receive your travel documents and, if booked, your rental bicycles. Various parking options are available for your car at an additional charge, including at the Donau Touristik information point, the arrival hotel, or the Güterbahnhof parking garage. Parking fees are approximately € 11,- per car per day and are payable locally. Afterwards, you will have time to explore the charming Three Rivers City of Passau at your own pace, with its historic old town and attractive riverside promenades.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel.

Day 2, Wesenufer/Schlögen (40/50 km)

You leave Passau on the Danube Cycle Path and follow the river via Obernzell to the Jochenstein power station on the Austrian-German border. The route then continues through the charming landscape of the Upper Danube Valley to Engelhartszell, known for its Trappist monastery. Always following the banks of the Danube, you cycle through picturesque villages and unspoilt natural stretches towards the Schlögen Loop. This impressive river bend is one of the most famous landscapes along the Danube. Your destination for the day is Wesenufer or Aschach, where you can end the day at your leisure.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel.

Day 3, Linz (56/45 km)

From the Schlögen Loop, your cycling tour leads through the impressive Danube Gorge near Kaiserau, one of the most unspoilt and sparsely populated sections of the Danube Valley. The route continues to Aschach, whose historic Baroque market square, with its colourful facades, invites you to stop for a short visit. You then cycle through the fertile Eferding Basin to the town of Eferding. Passing through Wilhering, with its magnificent Rococo church renowned for its numerous angel figures, and the picturesque Danube-side town of Ottensheim, you finally reach Linz, the capital of Upper Austria.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel or 4☼☼☼☼ hotel.

Day 4, Wallsee/Au (45/30 km)

Follow the Danube Cycle Path through the vast Machland region, a cultural landscape shaped by the Danube, featuring fertile fields and extensive floodplain areas. The route first leads through Steyregg and on to the Abwinden power station, one of Austria’s major hydroelectric plants on the Danube. You then reach Mauthausen, a traditional riverside town. From here, continue cycling along the Danube to Au. Alternatively, the route passes through Mitterkirchen in the Machland region, with its characteristic landscape, before continuing to Wallsee. Throughout the stage, you are accompanied by charming views of the Danube and its riverside scenery.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel.

Day 5, Maria Taferl/Marbach/Pöchlarn (50/67 km)

You cycle through the scenic Strudengau region, a particularly impressive section of the Danube Valley. The route continues through the romantic Hößgang to Ybbs, whose historic old town invites you to take a short break. Following the Danube, you eventually reach your destination for the day. Depending on the tour option booked, you will stay overnight in Maria Taferl, Austria’s second-largest pilgrimage destination with its prominently visible basilica, or in Marbach or Pöchlarn. This varied stage combines nature, culture, and historic sites along the Danube Cycle Path.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel.

Day 6, Krems/Traismauer (54/67 km)

You can look forward to one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube Cycle Path. First, you reach Melk with its prominently visible Benedictine Abbey, one of the most significant Baroque buildings in Europe. You then cycle through the UNESCO World Heritage region of the Wachau Valley, renowned for its vineyards, historic towns, and magnificent views of the Danube. The route takes you via Spitz and Weißenkirchen to Dürnstein, with its picturesque old town and famous castle ruins. Afterwards, continue to Krems, also part of the UNESCO World Heritage area, or onward to Traismauer. If you wish, you may shorten the stage by taking a Wachau boat trip, for example from Spitz or Dürnstein to Krems. In the event of low or high water levels, a transfer by train may be required.

Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼ hotel.

Day 7, Vienna (80/70 km)

On your final stage, the Danube continues to accompany you towards Vienna. The cycle path leads through the foothills of the Vienna Woods to the flower town of Tulln and then via Klosterneuburg, with its famous abbey, to Austria’s federal capital. Vienna captivates visitors with an extraordinary wealth of attractions, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Ringstrasse, Schönbrunn Palace and Zoo, the Prater, the Danube Tower, and Belvedere Palace. If you wish to shorten the route, train connections are available every 30 minutes from Krems to Tulln, or from Tulln or Klosterneuburg to Vienna.

Overnight stay in a 4☼☼☼☼ hotel.

Day 8, Return Journey

After breakfast, you begin your journey home. From May 8 to October 16, the return transfer from Vienna is available every Saturday by comfortable coach directly from the hotel. This option is also available on Sundays from May 30 to June 27. On all other weekdays, you will return individually by train. Included is a 2nd-class train ticket with free choice of trains operating at two-hour intervals. Please note that no transfer to or from the railway station is included. For guests travelling with their own bicycles, a bicycle return transfer is available for departures from Friday to Monday. The bicycle must be handed in in Vienna on the previous day.
