Top sights

As the name Flower Island suggests, there is plenty to discover here, from the Italian rose garden and the historic arboretum to the exotic centrepiece – the palm house and butterfly house. The perennial garden alone is home to more than 20,000 plants of over 700 varieties. The Italian flower water staircase is also a well-known and popular photo motif.

The Gardener's Tower and the Swedish Tower are relics of a bygone era. The former originates from the remains of the medieval island fortress and is now a souvenir shop and post office. The latter extends from the vineyards and served as a watchtower in its day. The current helmet roof and wooden cladding date back to the 19th century.

Mainau Castle is the architectural centrepiece of the island. This Baroque gem was built in the 18th century and is still the residence of the count's family today. The lower part of the Teutonic Order castle is open to visitors. Special exhibitions are regularly held in the historic coat of arms hall.

In addition to the castle, the castle church is also something very special. The outstanding artists Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer, Franz Joseph Spiegler, Francesco Pozzi and Johann Baptist Babel decorate the church with ceiling frescoes, stucco work and distinctive furnishings.

Culture & Events

Throughout the year, residents and visitors to the island enjoy fantastic events and activities. Autumn brings wonderful classical music concerts to Mainau Castle. Guided tours of the park are also a regular feature of the events calendar.

Cuisine

There is a wide variety of culinary delights to enjoy on Mainau Island. Surrounded by magnificent natural scenery, you will find freshly cooked regional specialities, light snacks for between meals and delicious coffee and cake.
