Treis-Karden
Top Attractions
The magnificent Collegiate Church of St. Castor (in Karden – open daily) features a terracotta altar, important late 13th-century wall paintings, and an organ built by the renowned Stumm family of organ builders. The Collegiate Museum in the Karden district displays interesting collections from the former collegiate foundation. Saint Castor, a companion of Bishop Maximin of Trier, founded a Christian community in Cardena (an ancient settlement at the foot of the Martberg). From this, the Collegiate Foundation of St. Castor developed. The foundation, composed solely of priests of equal rank and without an abbot, was a center of painting and manuscript production in the Middle Ages.
