Top Attractions

A particularly beautiful starting point for a visit is the Große Markt, the historic centre of the city. Here you will find two of Wesel’s best-known landmarks: the Willibrordi Cathedral and the historic town hall façade. The Willibrordi Cathedral was built in its current form in the 16th century as a late Gothic basilica and remains an important place for church services, concerts and cultural events to this day.

Directly on the Große Markt, the reconstructed historic town hall façade recalls Wesel’s heyday as a Hanseatic city. Also well worth seeing are the Wesel Citadel, an important reminder of the city’s former role as a fortress town, and the Berlin Gate, the only surviving city gate from the former fortifications.

Culture & Events

Wesel offers a varied cultural scene with museums, exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances. At the Municipal Theatre, plays, concerts, ballet, musicals and other stage productions are held regularly.

A special highlight in the events calendar is EselRock, a free open-air festival that attracts numerous visitors every year. The city’s museums also offer fascinating insights into art, history and culture – from temporary exhibitions to permanent collections.

Cuisine

Wesel also has plenty to offer when it comes to culinary experiences. In the city centre, around the Große Markt and at scenic viewpoints, visitors will find cafés, restaurants and cosy venues serving regional, international and traditional cuisine.

Whether enjoying a coffee with a view over the rooftops of the city, a relaxed dinner in a pleasant atmosphere or Lower Rhine specialities after a stroll through town, Wesel offers many ways to round off a visit with culinary pleasure.
